Kumbakonam 6 Murugan Temples

The holy town of Kumbakonam is surrounded by six sacred abodes of Lord Murugan, each carrying unique legends, divine powers, and architectural beauty. These temples, deeply rooted in Tamil spiritual tradition, are visited by thousands of devotees who seek blessings for wisdom, courage, and prosperity.

1. Swamimalai – Arulmigu Swaminathaswamy Temple
   Located just 5 km from Kumbakonam, this is one of the Arupadai Veedu (six abodes of Murugan). Here, Lord Murugan is worshipped as the divine teacher who explained the meaning of “Om” to Lord Shiva Himself. The temple is built on an artificial hillock with 60 steps, each representing the 60 Tamil years.

2. Erakaram – Adi Swaminathaswamy TempleKnown as the original abode of Swaminathaswamy, this temple is believed to be where Murugan first appeared before his devotees. The presiding deity blesses devotees with knowledge and courage, and the temple holds ancient Chola inscriptions.

3. Ettukudi – Arulmigu Subramania Swamy Temple
   Famous for its graceful idol of Murugan with Valli and Deivanai, Ettukudi is renowned for its exquisite sculptures. The temple has a serene atmosphere where Lord Murugan is seen as a youthful, charming deity blessing devotees with love and harmony.

4. Poravacheri – Arulmigu Kandaswamy Temple
   At Poravacheri, Murugan is worshipped as Kandaswamy, the remover of obstacles and granter of boons. The temple is especially revered for curing ailments and giving strength to overcome struggles in life.

5. Sikkal – Sri Singaravelan Temple
   A temple of great historical significance, Sikkal is where Lord Murugan is believed to have received his Vel (spear) from Goddess Parvati before defeating the demon Surapadman. The Soorasamharam festival here is very famous, where the deity is seen sweating in divine fury before the battle.

6. Enkan – Arulmigu Subramania Swamy Temple
   At Enkan, Lord Murugan is worshipped as a majestic warrior riding on his peacock. The temple is known for its ancient traditions and attracts devotees seeking valor, protection, and family prosperity.
